“Theyre trying to kill me,” Yossarian told him calmly.
“No ones trying to kill you,” Clevinger cried.
“Then why are they shooting at me?” Yossarian asked.
“Theyre shooting at everyone,” Clevinger answered. “Theyre trying to kill everyone.”
“And what difference does that make?”
Yossarian explains to his friend why he is not crazy for thinking people are trying to kill him.
“There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for ones own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions.”
Doc Daneekas explains why he cannot ground either Yossarian or Orr due to insanity.
“Major Major never sees anyone in his office while hes in his office.”
Sergeant Towser explains why Appleby can only go in to see Major Major when he is not in the office.
“The enemy, retorted Yossarian with weighted precision, is anyone whos going to get you killed, no matter which side hes on, and that includes Colonel Cathcart.”
Yossarian defends his position that it does not matter who wins the war as long as hes alive.
“There was a much lower death rate inside the hospital than outside the hospital, and a much healthier death rate. Few people died unnecessarily.”
Why Yossarian prefers being inside the hospital to being outside.

This follows a description of Colonel Cathcarts insecurities about his power.

The first reference to Snowdens death that starts to explain what happened.
“But, he wont help anybody. Thats one of the reasons hell go far.”
Yossarian describing ex-PFC Wintergreen.
“The country was in peril; he was jeopardizing his traditional rights of freedom and independence by daring to exercise them.”
Milos admonition to Yossarian
“Man was matter, that was Snowdens secret.”
This explains why Yossarian lost his courage after seeing Snowdens insides spill out all over the plane.
